Dreams of Gold in Tumpang Pitu

When roaring motorcycles broke the silence of the night in the teak woods, a beam of light flashed from a distance by a miner in a small hamlet in the protected forest zone of Gunung Tumpang Pitu, Pesanggaran district, Banyuwangi, East Java.

The vast teak woods bear abundant gold deposits, offering a potential treasure trove to local residents. The forest land, once a deserted area, has now become an overnight hunting ground for treasure, reportedly with each ton of gravel containing 2.3 grams of gold.

With the discovery of gold ores by the local people several years ago, hundreds of residents have been thronging the area to pan for gold. Even without skills, they are digging into the earth and panning in groups at the foot of the mountain. Along the river stream, they are prepared to flounder about for hours in the hunt for gold.

Today, the gold mining zone in Gunung Tumpang Pitu has sparked controversy in connection with threats to wildlife around the protected forest. On the other hand, the contamination by ore tailings is a menace to the life and productivity of the local community.
